Holiday Traditions

November 19th, 2008

Let’s share some of our holiday traditions here for our classmates to see. Every family has some kind of tradition for the holidays.

Here’s a couple of ours.

Thanksgiving

Every year the family gathers at my sister-in-law’s house in Youngsville, NC for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s actually a two-day event. On Thanksgiving Day we eat dinner around 1:00 pm and then continue eating all day long till we are stuffed to the max! (See the previous post about sharing what we are thankful for.) After dinner we sit around watching TV or just talking with friends and family. Usually 15-20 people there both friends and relatives.

The day after Thanksgiving is a day of shopping for all the women in the family. They are up at the crack of dawn and out fighting the crowds at the mall looking for bargains all day long. (You can count me out of that tradition!) I’m content just to sit around and nibble on left overs.

Christmas Eve

Since Thanksgiving is spent at my sister-in-law’s house, it’s only fair that we get to host Christmas Eve at our house! My wife would be broken hearted if the family did not gather at our house for Christmas Eve.

We start with dinner around 5:00 pm and then it’s off to church at 7:00 pm. After church we come back to the house and have a birthday cake for Jesus and sing Happy Birthday.

Then we open presents. This is great for the kids because they actually get to open presents twice…once at our house then on Christmas Day they get to open all the gifts under their tree in their own house! It’s also good for the parents, because they get to stay home on Christmas Day since they made the family visit on Christmas Eve.

Your turn…please leave a comment and tell us about some of your Holiday Traditions.

Happy Thanksgiving

November 19th, 2008

I want to wish each and every one of you a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving.

In our family we have a Thanksgiving tradition and I think our class should also give it a try. As we sit around the dinner table on Thanksgiving day we take turns sharing one thing that we are thankful for.

We can do the same thing here by leaving a comment on this blog. You need to be register to comment so if you are not already registered please sign up now. You will be emailed a password. Then login and share something with us that you are thankful for this Thanksgiving.

I’ll get the ball rolling. Even though it has been a really tough year for us since both my wife and I were laid off from work and I lost my driver’s license due to vision problems, I have a lot to be thankful for.

I believe that when one door is closed another will be opened. I am thankful for the opportunity to challenge myself as I try to make a living working from home. I also am thankful for the one good eye that I can still see out of. Most of all I am thankful for my wife, Christine, who is always by my side encouraging me!

Okay…that was more than one thing, but you get the idea. Please login and leave a comment sharing with us what it is you are thankful for as we approach the end of another year.
